With the emergence of dancesport in modern times, the term has become narrower in scope, usually refering now to the International Standard and International Latin style dances, which were developed in England and are now regulated by the World Dance Council (WDC). In the United States, some additional variations are popular: American Smooth and American Rhythm. There are as well other dances occasionally referered to as Ballroom, as may be Club or Nightclub Dance (used in the meaning of Disco Dance), Latin Nightclub, Brazilian, Country/Western, Vintage and others.
